The
Winterization
Project

To support The Winter Residency, the Queer Culture Arts Foundation introduces The Winterization Project. This innovative fund is dedicated to winterizing qualifying homes in Fire Island Pines, ensuring they are habitable during the colder months. Many of these homes, not originally winterized, are closed down each fall and left unoccupied until spring. The Winterization Project covers the cost of winterizing these homes, making them suitable for habitation during the off-season. In exchange for covering these expenses, the foundation enters into a 3-5-year lease agreement with the property owners, utilizing the spaces for The Winter Residency. This initiative not only revitalizes the community during the winter months but also provides artists with a unique and inspiring setting for their work. Property owners can renew their commitment to The Winterization Project, contributing to the sustained success of this artistic and community-focused endeavor.

Make A Difference

  • Overview + Submission

The Winterization Project operates as a symbiotic relationship between the Queer Culture Arts Foundation and the homeowners of Fire Island Pines. Homeowners interested in participating in the project submit their properties for consideration. Upon qualification, the foundation covers the costs of winterizing these homes, ensuring they are equipped for habitation during the off-season. In return, property owners commit to a 3-5 year lease agreement, allowing the foundation to utilize the spaces for The Winter Residency program.

  • The Selection Process

Property owners who wish to be part of The Winterization Project submit applications detailing their homes' eligibility. The foundation evaluates these applications based on criteria such as location, structural integrity, and suitability for winterization. Once accepted into the program, the foundation covers the winterization costs, including insulation, heating systems, and other necessary adjustments to make the homes winter-ready.

  • Renewal + Community Impact

The Winterization Project operates on a 3-5 year lease commitment, providing stability and continuity for both the foundation and property owners. After the initial term, property owners have the option to renew their commitment to The Winterization Project, demonstrating the positive impact on both the community and the artists involved. The renewed leases contribute to the ongoing success of The Winter Residency.
